Adrian Dunbar are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed police drama

The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
