McLaren Points Finger at Rival Drivers for Team-Mate Crash

Wheel flies off racing car after collision between Piastri and Norris

One tire flies off the car of Norris after he crashed into fellow driver Piastri at the start of the US GP short race.

McLaren Formula 1 leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella attributed opposing racers for the crash between Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

The Australian driver, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, made contact with his team-mate after making contact with the Hulkenberg.

The incident eliminated both team drivers out of the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Incident

Brown, the team's chief executive officer, stated to broadcasters that some of the driving at the start was "unprofessional", remarking: "Obviously Nico made contact with Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."

The team boss Andrea Stella commented: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to race."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with justful prudence. Enter the initial turn, make sure you don't damage competitors and carry on."

The team clarified that Stella was referring to both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Contrasting Views on the Incident

Nevertheless, former champion Damon Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not shown enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to cut back to try to overtake Norris.

The Australian had a better start than the Briton and initially competed on the outside on the ascending entry to the turn.

However he then moved inside in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the way out, only to hit the Sauber driver.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Lando. A shame."

His teammate said: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more people further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from yesterday in the trash. Just chaotic."

"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Oscar turned in and the collision was unavoidable."

Post-Crash and McLaren's Reaction

McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the event weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to compete, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."

"Championship points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more care would be good for all involved."

Championship Implications

The race was won by the Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three behind of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the numbers says - we missed out on eight championship points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled drivers. We anticipate just some normal racing."

Verstappen said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
