Locating the Venezuela-linked Tanker Reportedly Pursued by the US Coast Guard

Our team is checking images and video posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
