International Bodies and the UK Denounce an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Prison Term.

The sentencing of political dissident and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Rights groups and multiple governments have described the security-related charges politically motivated.

Widespread Disapproval and Appeals for Liberation

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the 20-year term amounts to a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She labeled the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute intended to muzzle those who speak out against China. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.

“This verdict demonstrates how the imprecise and extensive stipulations of Hong Kong’s security law may be enforced in breach of universal rights standards,” said top UN human rights official Volker Türk.

An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “condemns” the conclusion of the judicial process and called for his prompt and absolute freedom.

Details of the Legal Proceedings

Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the imposition of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing following widespread unrest which Lai and his newspaper supported.

He was ultimately convicted on counts of conspiracy to produce seditious material and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The latter charges were brought under the controversial security law.

Family Concerns

The activist's child, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone separated from his loved ones. His international counsel described him the “planet's most prominent detainee” currently incarcerated.

Sebastien Lai said that while the outcome was foreseen, its announcement felt worse than imagined, even as it offered some “solace” that the court process had concluded.

International Ramifications

The verdict has influenced the bilateral relationship. British leader Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping in January. Yet, visible progress towards his release remains unclear.

Sebastien Lai asked the upside to a visa-free travel agreement announced recently, remarking it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Authorities' Statements

Conversely, the officials from China endorsed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the ruling demonstrated that “law and order is maintained.”

An official representing China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “mastermind” behind past unrest and maintained the trial had been “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries to avoid meddling in what he termed China's internal issues.

A Symbolic Case

Media freedom advocates labeled Lai as a symbol of eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who cherish a free press.”

Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting security-related crimes, Lai’s severe sentence is seen as the strictest yet delivered under the disputed law.
