From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a Latest Title That Looks Very Different But Evolves Familiar Concepts.

The acclaimed co-director responsible for The Last of Us is making his return into game development. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the debut of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on his previous work with a focus on characters that learn and adapt.

Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept

Unveiled during the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. Players control an elderly witch, a hero that defies typical power fantasies. The foundational premise stemmed from an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.

"What if you didn’t have combat prowess? What if your character was physically limited? What if you're an elderly woman?" mused the creative lead. "I thought it was really fascinating to question what makes a hero. Heroism involves persevering against problems, including traits like sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

While the game seems unfamiliar on the surface, its most significant advancement evolves from the technology seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception flowed from a key thought: "Is it possible to design an AI partner truly living and learning to the player?"

The mysterious beast that accompanies Gertie is far from a scripted follower. The director likens it to a toddler which observes and responds in three key stages. First, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in unexpected chaos. Then, it enters a playful state. Ultimately, it observes and assimilates grasping cause and effect.

  • As an instance: If the creature sees an object being placed, it learns the motion absent the context.
  • Subsequently, it may begin grabbing various things and test fitting them, copying the action.
  • The 'why' is learned solely through accidental success a puzzle itself, teaching through experience.

Crafting Your Own Unique Story

Such advanced AI aims to foster individualized narrative moments. The creative lead highlights that this project will be a contemplative journey of exploration instead of a linear, combat-centric story.

"Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," the director noted. "The true vitality of this relationship stems from how each individual player are going to have unique moments and stories than I will."

This commitment to organic narrative born from interaction, the new title marks both an evolution and a significant shift from the creator's iconic past work. This adventure remains in development for Windows PC.
