Chicago's MLB Team Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Agreement.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16M for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

The agreement includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Historical Context

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing double that drove in teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the USA, he blasted a tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
