US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the shutdown began.
